Broken Concrete Step
The Assignment: Remove a broken corner, which had been glued. Replace, follow the brush pattern, parge.
The Underlying Problem: The corner was broken by an adjacent retaining wall which heaved. The owner corrected the problem, and needed the damage repaired
The Assignment: Rebuild the chimney with new bricks, Replace the broken pre-cast chimney cap pieces with a cement cap, Add a flue rain-cover, Caulk the flashing, Use high-temperature caulking.for the furnace vent.
The Underlying Problems: The cement was much stronger than the brick - which leads to brick breakage. The pre-cast chimney cap's seams failed.
Brickwork, Cultured Stone, Stone, Blocks THINGS YOU SHOULD LOOK FOR WHEN FINDING CAUSES OF YOUR BRICK OR STONE PROBLEM. Do you see erosion, holes or hairline cracks in the mortar between the bricks? Pointing, with good colour matches The keys to success in pointing: Remove all the weakened cement; Make enough room for new cement to hold securely; Wash the dust fron the joints and moisten the brick; Make the cement appropriate to the wind, temperature and humidity. And use a dye colour that closely matches the original, with white or grey cement as a base.
Foundation Maintenance, Pointing Cleaning out and maintaining stone is essential. Colour can be used for effect, from white through black and grey, to any colour.
Parging A good preparation includes cleaning the old surface, digging out damaged cement. A bonding agent is applied before the parging cement, to help adherence and protection.
